The currency in Japan is called yen. Below are basic guides for familiarizing yourself with the denominations:
Coins
¥1 – Silver color, small
¥5 – Bronze color, has a hole in the middle
¥10 – Copper color
¥50 – Silver color, has a hole in the middle
¥100 – Silver color
¥500 – Silver color (old), it is largest among all Yen coins
Notes
¥1000 – Blue color, has Noguchi Hideyo on the front side
¥5000 – Purple color, has Higuchi Ichiyo on the front side
¥10000 – Brown color, has Fukuzawa Yukichi on the front side
You can exchange your foreign money in major banks, main post offices, and some hotels and large department stores. Note that banks can only exchange US Dollars. If you wish to change other currencies to yen, visit foreign exchange offices located in major airports. The most common banks to easily exchange are MUFG Bank, SMBC, Mizuho Bank, and Japan Post Bank. Credit, debit and ATM cards issued outside Japan are mostly not accepted by automatic teller machines, except for ATMs in major post offices, and in 7-Eleven convenience stores nationwide.
