It is widely known that the Japanese consume whale meat. In a much deeper look, they eat whale because eating animals with four legs, including the domesticated livestock, following the Shinto and Buddhism doctrine, is a taboo. Mainly, whale meat is their source of red meat. However, upon Westernization and enlightenment, the beef was introduced to the Japanese diet. Ironically, now, the Japanese produces the most expensive kind of beef, wagyu; and even eat raw basashi or horse meat.
