Matsushima Bay has been celebrated as one of Japan's three most scenic views alongside Miyajima and Amanohashidate. The bay is dotted by over 260 small islands covered by pine trees.
Matsushima is located in the central region of Miyagi Prefecture. The view of Matsushima changes from place-to-place and from-season-to-season. With its stunning island scenery, the place is frequented by visitors all year round.
A good way to enjoy the bay is by sightseeing cruise. There are sightseeing cruises on the bay lasting about an hour run by Marubun Matsushima Kisen and a regular ferry service between Matsushima and Shiogama operated by Matsushima Bay Cruise.
Longer cruises will get you to the more remote areas of Oku-Matsushima which are less spoiled by industrial and urban development. Cruises last 25 to 50 minutes that is mainly cost between 1000 to 1500 yen and depart frequently.
