Free wireless internet service are usually available in various establishments, such as coffee shops, restaurants, bars, airports, train stations, etc., but note that other similar establishments may charge for the access. In the recent years, however, the Japanese government collaborated with renowned companies to provide the country with a free, high-quality Wi-Fi internet. It then resulted in an increase of free wi-fi hotspots throughout Japan.
Furthermore, there are also two free smartphone apps that can make you access the internet: Japan Connected-free Wi-Fi and Travel Japan Wi-Fi.
Paid Wi-Fi hostpots are also common around Japan, but there are networks that provide the service free, particularly to tourists. The average cost of a 1-day unlimited internet access amounts to at least 500+ yen, depending on the provider/network.
This is a rent-type of service, which charges customers by either every 30 minutes of 1 hour (Other cafes will offer discounts if you choose to rent for multiple hours). These cafes/kiosks are usually found near train or bus stations.
