Starting October 13, Japan will offer unlimited expressway passes to all foreign tourists in Japan.
This is part of the efforts of the Transport Ministry of Japan to get more visitors to regional areas.
Aside from the foreign tourists, foreign nationals living in Japan, as well as all Japanese citizens living outside the country, can also avail of the passes. However, for these people to purchase the passes, they must have a valid driver’s license that is legally accepted in Japan.
The 7-day Japan Express Pass costs 20,000 yen, or around 175 US dollars, while the 14-day Japan Express Pass costs 34,000 yen, or approximately 300 US dollars. The passes are available at around 275 rental car shops located across Japan.
This seems to be a good deal for tourists planning to go driving across the archipelago. However, expressways in Hokkaido, Tokyo, and Osaka are excluded from the campaign.
