The Tokyo Auto Salon displayed its 36th annual custom-car showcase on January 12 to 14 at the Makuhari Messe International Convention Complex in Chiba City, Japan.
2018 recorded the largest attendees in the event’s history so far. Over 300,000 visitors poured at the entrance of the Makuhari Messe, and no more than 440 exhibitors brought their customized fleet of over 800 vehicles, each boasting of its impressive exteriors at the annual three-day event.
Japan’s big manufacturers were here— Honda, Hino, Mazda, Mitsubishi Industries. Other automotive titans like Toyota and Mercedes Benz also came to show how to tune up, dress up or pimp your ride.
The first day of the event was strictly for trade show participants, members of the media, and premium ticket holders. A classic car auction by BH Auction highlights a 1990 Nissan R90CK, a Nissan race car designed to compete in the World Sports Car Championship. The public viewing of the cars happened on the 13th and 14th of January, between 9:00AM to 7:00PM and 9:00AM to 5:00PM consecutively.
One of the cars displayed was the new Honda NSX, which was only intended for the Japanese market. Another cool car in the event was the dressed-up GT-R, courtesy of customizer and body kit specialist Kuhl, and painter and artist Rohan. Another car, the Lyzer, kicked off a customized Lamborghini covered with 600,000 hand-glued Swarovski crytals onto its pink outer skin. Toyota had the most exciting car being presented at 2018 TAS as it unveils the GR Super Sport Concept, the vehicle that incorporates the hybrid technology of a supercar, and a full Le Mans prototype.
The Tokyo Auto Salon also had this fancy little test drive booth where anyone had the chance to drive their dream car. The event was also showered with a bit of tradition as taiko drummers performed to entertain the guests.
