The tropical fruit growing in cold weather, Mongee (pronounced “mon-gay”) Banana, produced by D&T Farm, has its peel fit for human consumption. It is a rare type of banana, and the fruits section in department stores in Tenmanya Okayama sells only 10 pieces per week.
Given its unusual nature, the mongee banana costs higher than a typical banana. Each mongee costs ¥648 or $5.72, a little expensive for a banana but not like the price of a bunch of Roman Ruby grapes or the Yubari melon.
Japan, having a naturally cold climate, is impossible to yield a tropical fruit like banana, which is primarily the reason why they named the tropical fruit “Mongee” which means “incredible” in Okayama slang. The agricultural company D&T Farm and Mr. Tanaka, the major investor and founder of the experimental research on mongee, used the "freeze thaw awakening” method to make the tropical fruit grow in cooler climates. It resulted to their first successful harvest in November.
Some people who have tried eating the incredible banana distinguished that mongee is sweeter than a typical banana, which contains 24.8g of sugar content, compared to the 18.3g average of traditional bananas. In comparing the texture and smell, mongee banana is tackier and has a more distinct scent than usual bananas. Additionally, its outer surface appearance contains little brown dots and has a thin-layered peel.
