Located in the Momijigayatsu Valley in the town of Nikaido, in Kamakura Prefecture, the Zuisen-ji Temple was not as public as other temples in Japan. It used to be the family temple of the Kanto Kubos or the title used by the shoguns of the Kamakura Prefecture. Four of the five kanto kubos of Kamakura, who are all part of the Ashikaga clan, were actually buried in the private cemetery inside the compound of the Zuisen-ji Temple. Presently, the cemetery is said to have been closed to the public. The first kubo, Ashikaga Motouji was actually also known in the name Zuisen-ji-den.
