San'en-zan Zōjō-ji is a Buddhist temple that stands right next to the Tokyo Tower. It is the Great Main Temple of the Chinzai sect of the Shingon school. The main image is of Amida Buddha.
It was built in the year 1393 which was founded by Yūyo Shōsō. In 1958, Tokugawa Ieyasu chose it as his family temple. It is the reason why a mausoleum of the Tokugawa family is on the temple grounds.
The temple was badly damaged in World War II which is why most of the buildings in the area have been reconstructed already except for the main gate, Sangedatsu Gate, which has withstood wars, fires and earthquakes. It is the only structure in the temple to survive the Second World War. The Sangedatsu Gate is considered as an Important Cultural Property.
