In Yamaguchi prefecture, a historical wooden arch bridge stands and it is called the Kintai Bridge. It has been Iwakuni's most distinctive landmark ever since it has been built in 1673. The bridge is one of its kind for its sturdiness despite being entirely made of wood and without the use of any nails.
It consists of five wooden arches along the Nishiki River, on the foot of Mt. Yokoyama where the Iwakuni castle is also situated at. It was in 1608, after the Iwakuni Castle was completely constructed, when the construction for the wooden bridges started. The five wooden arches sits on top of massive stone pillars to keep the bridge strongly protected from floods. And the design is considered to be a revolutionary one, up until the 20th century.
