This place would probably be one of the inspirations for the setting of the Ghibli movies entitled, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind or Princess Mononoke.
The Yakushima Forest, located in the Osumi Islands has been designated as the UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve in 1980. Located in Kagoshima Prefecture, the place is the home of the loggerhead sea turtle in the North Pacific, and has been considered as its largest nesting ground in Japan. In 1993, the place has been hailed as the a natural World Heritage Site. It has been said that the place has no record of a past tree being cut.
