Along the busy streets of Tokyo is a street traditionally dedicated to candies and everything sweet. Between the stations of Okachimachi and Ueno, there is a street called Ameyoko, which traverses along the Yamanote Line. The name is the short version for Ameya Yokocho, literally the candy store alley. Incidentally, the term ame can also refer to "American." This is because the street also once had a line of shops selling underground items from the United States. This was prominent in the area after World War II.
Presently, the area contains shops selling all sorts of items, from bags, to cosmetics, to dried food.
