Located in the city of Toba in Mie Prefecture, Japan, the aquarium boasts of 12 naturally-reproduced zones, which give artificial homes to around 25,000 organisms, representing around a thousand species of marine organisms. The Toba Aquarium, founded by Haruaki Nakamura, opened its doors in May 1955, serving around 50 million traveling guests from time to time. The place has been administered by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology as an official museum that can host scholarly marine researches. The place has also been a breeding ground and conservation facility for endangered species.
