An old bridgeway gives Hokkaido a touch of ancient Rome. The Taushubetsu Bridge is what one considers as the "phantom bridge." Phantom bridges are those structures built over lakes, that sometimes become submerged in water, depending on the tide. This bridge used to be part of the concrete arch bridges of the Old National Railway Shihoro line in Hokkaido Prefecture. The bridge is also called the meganebashi or eyeglasses bridge because the bridge itself and its reflection in the clear lake water look like eyeglasses. The full history of the bridge is now available in the railway museum in the town of Kamishihoro.
