The gate of Emperor Hotohori's empire in the manga, Fushigi Yuugi, may have been based in real life.
Called the Suzaku Gate, Suzaku also being the guardian of Hotohori's empire, this is the main gate of the Japanese imperial palace in Heijo-kyo, Nara Prefecture. The main gate actually has the same look for all the imperial palaces of the ancient capitals of Japan, including the one in Fujiwara-kyo in the city of Kashihara, also in Nara Prefecture. The Heian-kyo has the same structure and is located in Kyoto Prefecture, the place considered to be the "old Japan."
