Known as the Castle of the Floating Isle, the Sunpu Castle was owned by the Tokugawa Shogunate during feudal Japan. Located in the province of Sunpu, which is the modern-day city of Shizuoka, the place is also sometimes called the Fuchu Castle or the Shizuoka Castle.

The Suruga province of old Japan, which is at the foot of modern-day Shizuoka, was originally owned by the Imagawa clan. It was taken over by the Takeda clan when the new one defeated the former in the Battle of Okehazama. It was later on transferred to Tokugawa Ieyasu, who later on formed their own shogunate.
