Whoever have seen Makoto Shinkai's The Garden of Words would defenitely recognize the scene depicted in this photograph.

Makoto Shinkai is an animator and filmmaker who is fond of recreating or incorporating actual existing places in his movies. The Shinjuku Gyoen is one of them. The area was originally the residence of the Naito family during the Edo period. When the Imperial Household Agency of Japan took hold of the place, they transformed it into a garden. When the present govenment system took over, the management of the place was transferred to the Ministry of the Environment.
