Nagano and Niigata Prefecture have something that they can boast to the other more "famous" prefectures in Japan. This is the Shinano River, which is considered to be the longest and largest river in the whole of the Land of the Rising Sun. Nagano even gave it their own name and calls the body of water as the Chikuma River.
The river comes from the heights of Mount Kobushi, bordering Saitama, Yamanashi and Nagano Prefectures. It goes in the northwest direction, meeting the Sai River, which is already part of the city of Matsumoto, along the way. It then extends up to the historical Kawanakajima, which is now part of present-day Nagano, and meets the Sea of Japan in the city of Niigata.
