SCAI the Bathhouse used to be the famous Kashiwayu bathhouse until it was renovated into a contemporary art museum in 1993 The museum is exceptional in its simplicity. White walls, a tiled roof, and a towering chimney adds to its antiquated charm.
SCAI stands for Shiraishi Contemporary Art Inc. Located in the neighborhood of Ueno Park, the gallery is known for featuring avant-garde artists from Japan and around the world. Exhibitions last for about two months. They have featured major leaders of contemporary art such as Toshikatsu Endo, Tatsuo Miyajima, and Mariko Mori, as well as up-and-coming stars like Kohei Nawa, Nobuko Tsuchiya, and Toru Kamiya.
The museum is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 12PM to 6PM.
