Located in the ward of Ukyo, northwest Kyoto, the Ryoanji is one of the many temples in the Kyoto Prefecture that preserves the prefecture's legacy of being the "old Japan." The temple is faciliatated by the Myoshinji school of the Rinzai branch of Zen Buddhism. Aside from the temple that made the place a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Ryoanji is also known for its garden, which is said to be a living survivor of the traditional Japanese art of dry landscaping, called the kare-sansui. This design is characterized by using a few pieces of boulder rocks, surrounded by small pebbles, put in a zen fashion.
