The Nijo Castle was one of the most notable historical places in Kyoto because it was the official residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa clan and the first ever shogun of the Edo Period of Japan. Located in Nakagyo Ward of Kyoto Prefecture, the Nijo Castle was constructed in 1603 and was actually just completed by Iemitsu, Ieyasu's grandson.
In 1867, the Tokugawa Shogunate lost. The place was used as an Imperial palace but was also later on just opened to the public. In 1994, it was hailed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
