It is said that there are the three common poses of Buddha statues: the one siting, the one standing, and the one reclining. The sitting Buddha is the most famous pose in Japan. This is why the Nanzoin Temple of Fukuoka Prefecture has become famous.
Housing a reclining Buddha is the Nanzoin Temple, located in the town of Sasaguri, in the Kasuya District of the Fukuoka Prefecture. This bronze statue belongs to the Shingon sect of Buddhism. The temple was said to be initially on top of Mt. Koyasan in the Wakayama Prefecture but was transferred to Sasaguri due to a fire threat by anti-Buddhist authorities.
