Located in the Tohoku region of northern Japan, the Matsukawa Geothermal Power Plant has been Japan's first commercial geothermal power facility. Housed in the city of Hachimantai, Iwate Prefecture, the place was discovered in 1952, when traces of steam were seen at the Matsuo mine. Completed in 1966, the power station is exactly on the Hachimantai Plateau, in the Oou Mountains. In the year 2016, the place was awarded the certificate for being one of the Mechanical Engineering Heritage sites of Japan, bestowed by the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers (JSME).
