Manpuku-ji is a temple in located in Uji, Kyoto that is dedicated to the Obaku branch of Zen buddhism. It was built in 1661 by Chinese Zen master Yinyuan. He built the temple in the style of Chinese monasteries of the Ming period. This can be seen in the building's double-layered, pavilion roof. The temple grounds are laid out in the shape of a dragon when viewed from above. When you enter, a paved driveway leads to the Tennoden Pavillion that houses the statue of Hotei, the reincarnation of the laughing Buddha Bodhisattva Miroku, or "He who is love".
