Hailed as the Natural Monument of Okayama Prefecture, Maki-do is a limestone cave known to be the location of the famous 1996 mysteery film, Yatsuhakamura (The Eight-Tomb Village).
The name of the cave came from two Japanese words. The first one is ma, which literally means "fullness." The second means ki, or in Japanese, means "mystery." A Japanese female poet once described the cave as "full of mystery." Hence the locals decided to name the cave as such.
The cave houses different kinds of stalactites and stalagmites like the hashiraishi (pillar stone), doketsusango (cave coral), and a lot more.
