Lake Mashu, a caldera lake found in Akan Mashu National Park vies for the title of the clearest lake in the world. It's Japan's clearest lake and as a second to Lake Baikal of Siberia, Russian Federation. Lake Mashu is located in the eastern part of Hokkaido island near the town of Teshikaga and the larger lake of Kussharo. Rumors about the lake tell that couples who visit Lake Mashu and can't see the surface of the lake because of fog, they will last for long. If a single person visits the lake during one clear day, he or she will marry later in life.
