Lake Kussharo is the largest caldera in the whole of Japan, and the sixth largest lake. Being a caldera, the lake is actually part of the composite volcano of the Nakajima Island. Though the water is acidic, a few life forms has been discovered in the area, and the Rainbow trout, a kind of fish, has also been introduced into the lake. In 1951, the people discovered the Oncotympana maculaticollis, a rare form or cicada in the lake. Conservations has been done ever since.
Being a volcano, the lake shore is actually famous for its hot springs and naturally-heated sand beaches.
