Unlike most shrines and temples, the Kumano Shrine is the type that exists in more than 3000 areas in the whole of Japan. Kumano Shrines are actually sacred shrines which house three Kumano mountain shrines: Hongu, Shingu, and Nachi. Each of the kami or the gods in the said shrines are actually transported from other Kumano shrines. This is done in the process of bunrei which is the sacred selection of each shrine.
The Kumano practice originated in the Kumano Sanzan shrine complex in Wakayama Prefecture.
