Aside from Shinto, Buddhism is another major religion in the Land of the Rising Sun. Being of such fame, a lot of schools for Buddhism has been established since the beginning of time to educate the people of Buddha's teachings.

Being a temple at the same time, the Kodaiji Zen is actually also a Rinzai school for Zen Buddhism. Located at outskirts of the Higashiyama Ryozen mountains, the temple was believed to be established in 1606. It was constructed by Nene, who wanted the temple to be a prayer place for her late husband, the great Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

Just like other temples in Kyoto prefecture, the place is surrounded by a lot of zen gardens.
