Today, Narita International Airport, located in Southern Tokyo, introduced a new innovation in travel and baggage check-in for international flights: the self-service check-in pods.
These machines can be operated only by the guests, without needing the help of airline ground personnel. Guests just need to put their baggage in the space provided, scan their airline tickets, and the machine will print out the sticker to be placed on your baggage. After putting the sticker on your bag, the machine will automatically carry the baggage to your designated plane. The process takes only around 2-3 minutes, compared to the usual 20 minutes.
Japan plans to put more of these machines in preparation for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics. Currently, the said self-service baggage system is available for Air France, Korean Air and two other carriers at Narita International Airport Terminal 1.
This video features the self-service baggage check-in machines currently at Haneda International Airport in Central Tokyo.
