In Shimane Prefecture, there is a Shinto shrine which date of establishment has not been found in any of the shrine documents. Thus the place is considered one of the most ancient shrines in Japan, even older than the Ise Grand Shrine, which is located in Mie Prefecture. Named the Izumo Taisha or the Izumo Grand Shrine, the place is made to wroship the god Okuninushi or Okuninushi-no-mikoto, who is the Shinto deity for marriage. The shrine is also dedicated to another god, Kotoamatsukami, or the heavenly god. In 1952, the shrine is considered a National Treasure of Japan.
