Daishō-in is a historic Japanese temple complex and known as the the main temple of the Shingon Buddhist school of Omuro. It is the majestic looking tower on the holy mountain, Mount Misen. It has been founded in the year 806 by Kūkai, the founder of Shingon Buddhism. It is also listed as the 14th temple in the Chūgoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage.
The 74th emperor of Japan, Emperor Toba, made an imperial order to make Daishō-in the place to pray for the peace and security of the nation.
The maple trees in the area as well as the autumn colors adds character to the place. It is part of the World Heritage Area of Itsukushima Shrine. Daishō-in is said to be the home a flame that has been burning for more than 1,200 years ago, or since the time it was founded.
