Having a variety of beautifully-sculpted rock formations along the west coast of the Shimokita Peninsula, the Hotoke-ga-ura is one of the proud attractions in the Mutsu Bay. Made of volcanic ashes, the highest of the rock formations is approximately 90 meters or 300 feet, and extending along the 1.5 kilometer stretch of the Sai village coastline. These maginificent volcanic ash sculptures have been hailed as a Natural Monument of Aomori Prefecture in 1934. Seven years later, it has been considered as the Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument. The place has also been famous as part fo the pilgrimage when visiting the nearby Mount Osore.
