During the Heian Period, which ran from 794 to 1185, the Fujiwara clan was the most powerful family in Japan. During this time, Hiraizumi was chosen as the seat of the Northern branch of the Fujiwara.
Tourist attractions in Hiraizumi include the Chusonji Temple, Motsuji Temple, Geibikei Gorge, and Takkoku no Iwaya.
