Gokoku-ji is a Shingon Buddhist temple located in Bunkyo-kyu, Tokyo. The name literally translates to "Protection of the Nation Temple". It was founded in 1681 by the fifth shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi. It was built as private temple for his mother, Keishoin.
The temple is dedicated to Daigensui Myoo, the deity who protects the realm from enemies and destroys them as well. He is the guardian deity of the Tokugawa shogunate. In 1697, the temple was opened to the public. It is one of the few temples in Tokyo that have survived centuries despite fires, earthquakes, and two world wars. The Gokoku-ji has a broad courtyard entrance decorated with picturesque varieties of cherry trees.
