Ginkaku ji is the Temple of Silver Pavilion located in Kyoto, Japan. It is a Zen Temple initially created as a retirement villa in 1460. It was built to serve as a place of rest and solitude for the Shogun, Ashikaga Yoshimasa.
Ginkaku ji is made up of several buildings. The main building is called the Kannonden or Silver Temple. Contrary to Kinkaku-ji, Ginkaku-ji is not actually covered in silver. It is said that it was a nickname given to the temple.
You can bring a piece of Ginkaku ji home by shopping along the road full of souvenir shops and restaurants.
Ginkaku ji is located in eastern Kyoto. It can easily be accessed by riding a bus from Kyoto Station.
