Situated along Mount Kinka and surrounded by the Nagara River, the place marked an important spot in history because the castle was owned by the famous Oda clan, headed by none other than one of the most influential shoguns of Japan, Oda Nobunaga.
The castle was originally owned by the Nikaido clan of the Kamakura period though, and was known by the name Inabayama Castle . During the Sengoku period, the castle was taken over by the Saito clan but later on sieged by Takenaka Hanbei, a samurai. It was in 1567 when the great Oda Nobunaga took over the place and changed the name to Gifu Castle.
