From 1300 to 1600, fortresses were built by the Japanese warlords. Only a few of these fortesses have survived and have been maintained and one of which is the Himeji Castle which is known for its steep walls and winding paths and gates. Original supplies and weapons can still be found in the castle. Another well-known fortress is the Nijo Castle which is known not for its defenseive architecture but for its elegant decor. Nijo Palace is the palace of the Shogun, Japan's military leader. National treasures such as paintings on gold can be found in the said palace.
