The city of Kamakura in Kanagawa Prefecture has five famous Zen temples in its territory. One of the more prominent ones is the Engakuji Temple which is loacted along the slopes of the Kita-Kamakura hills. The temple was founded in 1282 by the then ruling regent, Hojo Tokimune. The place was built a year after the second invasion attempt of the Mongols. The temple was constructed to commemorate all the Japanese and Mongolian soldiers who risked their lives in the battle.
In the entrance, travelers are welcomed by the Sanmon torii or gate, which was believed to be established in the area in 1783.
