Yamagata has a perfect view of mountains and the Sea of Japan. Hiking up Mount Hojusan, one can reach the popular destination, the Yama-dera or Risshakuji Temple. A popular product of Yamagata are their cherries.

Meanwhile, Sendai is a highly modernized city. It has a total of 7 universities and is sometimes dubbed as an "Academic City" because of this. The Tanabata or the star Festival is the most famous festival in the city.
