The Aomori Museum of Art is a modern art museum opened in July 2006 for the purpose of promoting the local culture and arts of the Tohoku region. The museum is home to Aomori native artists such as Shiko Munakata, Shuji Terayama, Toru Narita, and Yoshitomo Nara. The huge 8.5 meter tall Aomori-Ken dog statue by Nara has become the museum's iconic symbol.
More than a home for artwork, the Aomori Museum of Art also contains a library of visual books, cafe, and shop that are as aesthetically pleasing as the featured pieces. It is so that people can not only look, but spend time with the art as well. The museum is open from 9AM to 6PM on summers, and 9:30AM to 5PM during winter. Admission fee is 510 yen.
