Hailed as the world's longest suspension bridge, the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge truly is one of the most celebrated bridges in Japan. Opened for travel in 1998, the bridge is actually a part of the Kobe-Awaji-Naruto Expressway, which connects the main island of Honshu to the smaller island of Shikoku. The bridge traverses the Akashi Strait or the Akashi Kaikyo that is the body of water surrounding the city of Kobe and the smaller island of Awaji. Accessed through an elevator from the end of the bridge in the Kobe side is the Maiko Marine Promenande, which provides views of the interior of the bridge.
