Japan is among the 75 countries that drive on the left side of the road or Left-Hand Traffic (LHT). The steering wheel and the driver are in the right side inside the car. Some countries practice left driving when some of them were under the British Empire rule, (except for the USA that adopted left driving to distance from its former colonial master - UK). While Japan was never been a part of the British Empire, the country practised left driving that dates back to the Edo period (1603-1867). In 1872, the rule turned official.
By 1872, three countries approached the government of Japan to help the country build its railway system. These countries the USA, France and Britain entered the bidding. Out of the three, Britain won and a massive railway network started and spread across the country. Had France or USA won the bidding, Japan would have been driving in the right today.
