Tabi is the traditional footwear in Japan that is shaped like socks. Tabi is traditionally worn with kimono and other Japanese clothing. It has a thick sole perfectly made for outdoor use.
In Japan, students usually change their shoes to indoor shoes when they enter school. However, in Higashi Elementary School in Gyoda, Saitama, students put on tabi socks after they take off their shoes at the entrance. For the students, the socks where the big toe is being separated from others and fastened with kohaze clasps is "great for running" and are "very light". They use their tabi socks indoors and outdoors, while walking around the school building, gym, and even on the schoolyard.
. They take off their shoes at the entrance, go to their classrooms with regular socks on and then change into tabi. They walk around the school building, gym and even the schoolyard — when conditions permit — wearing their traditional socks.
