Originating from other Eastern countries, the traditional oil-paper umbrella is known in the Land of the Rising Sun as wagasa. The Japanese version is known for its janomegasa or bull's eye design.
The Japanese wagasa is said to have come from umbrellas brought to the country from the neigboring nation of Korea. Initially the umbrellas were widely used and were very important for the Buddhist ceremonies. As the time went by, the craft has been used for non-religious activities, together with the rise of thebamboo work industry and color pigmentation practice in Japan.
