Urushi is one of Japan's famous crafts. It has been used in Japan for as early as 7000 BC, and from the time the Japanese culture and civilization was still developing, more items were made of urushi, from bowls to tools and utensils. It is also used for religious altars and implements of war.
While the demand for lacquerware has diminished with the emergence of plasticware, there are still some artisans who continue to hone their skills in this craft even today.
The Yamanaka hot springs area in Ishikawa Prefecture is also known as lacquerware production region.
