Unkei is one of the reputable sculptors Japan has ever produced. He founded the Kei School, which was a school dedicated to Buddhist sculptures, during the Kamakura period in Japan.
His early works were actually said to be not so attention-worthy for they are simply like the works of his father, Kokei, who apparently is also a sculptor. During the course of his career, he made statues for Nara's Todai Temple and his works here were said to have started the current style he incorporated in his Kei school of buddhist sculptures.
