Imari Ware, or the Imari-yaki, are porcelain wares traditionally made in the town of Arita. Arita was one of the first in Japan to produce porcelain and Imari ware is considered one of the traditional handicrafts of Japan.
Exported to Europe in different eras, the Imari ware have different types and its subject is diverse. The designs are described as ‘uniquely Japanese’ and the porcelain is characterized by the gritty texture on the base. These Imari were imitated by Chinese and European traders alike. To this day, Imari ware is still being produced. There are also displays and exhibits dedicated to traditional and modern ceramics in Arita.
