There is a reason why Japan is outstanding when it comes to robotics businesses and innovations. Its history can be traced all the way back to the Edo Period, about 200-300 years ago when the art of Karakuri was brought to life. The craftsmen durng the Period wanted to showcase their skills, therefore, creating self-operating machines called automata.

The machines are not operated by batteries nor is it electrically powered. It uses pulleys and weights. Thus, giving an illusion that they are operating on their own.

The 25-year-old Hideki Higashino has been keeping the traditional art alive by creating Karakuri for years, hoping to inspire the next generation.
