The Imperial family of Japan is comprised of all the members, including the extended family members, of all the Emperors who have reigned in Japan. Being "the symbol of the State and of the unity of the people" the Emperor of Japan, including his family, are revered for their ceremonial and social duties, but, according to the present constitution of Japan, should not have anything to do with the present Japanese government.
The Japanese Imperial Family is considered to be the oldest continuous hereditary monarchy in the world today.
